We Will Assist MOPA: Environment Minister

Male’, 22 October 2020 – In a meeting held this afternoon, Minister of Environment and Energy, Dr. Hussain Rasheed Hassan assured that the Ministry would assist and support the Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) in rolling out the NGO’s programmes to manage the growing concern of single-use ocean plastics in the Maldives.

Welcoming his predecessor, the Founder and President of MOPA Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister Hussain Rasheed briefed him on the Ministry’s current priorities in waste management and environmental protection. He welcomed Thoriq’s initiative in forming MOPA and emphasised that the “Former Minister’s commitment to sharing his knowledge and expertise in the field is praiseworthy”. He reitirated that “MOPA can count on the Ministry’s support in every stage”.

Thoriq briefed the Minister on MOPA’s objectives and work plan, as well as the Alliance’s programmes earmarked for the coming few months.

“We have compiled a holistic plan of immediate and longer term projects, including a series of research studies that would be beneficial in policymaking”, the President of MOPA noted.

Minister Dr Hussain was joined by his State Minister Abdulla Naseer, Permanent Secretary Ajwad Musthafa and Director General of Waste Management Murthala.

The MOPA delegation was rounded out by COO Ahmed Maumoon and Executive Committee Member Ali Amir.
