Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) meets with The Male’ City Council
Male, 13 June 2021: Maldives Oceans Plastics Association (MOPA) has met with the Malé City Council (MCC) to discuss possible areas of collaboration on areas related to collection and recycling of single use plastics (SUPs) to support the “Chaalu Male (Beautiful Male’) campaign initiated by MCC.
Congratulating the Mayor, the Founder and President of MOPA in the meeting, briefed the Mayor MOPA’s objectives and work carried out. Thoriq also briefed on MOPA’s programs earmarked for the coming months. “We have compiled a holistic plan of short-term, low hanging fruits and longer-term projects and have also started advocating and awareness programs by launching a webinar series and monthly newsletter” the President of MOPA noted.
In the meeting, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu commended MOPA’s work in safely repurposing and recycling plastics, and noted on the importance of such NGO’s in protecting the environment and maintaining the natural beauty of the Maldives.
Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu also noted that even in his campaign he pledged to create “Chaalu Malé” (Beautiful Malé) which has been formally adopted as a target of the MCC. He also talked on the role the NGO’s could play in implementing a “Chaalu Malé.
In the meeting, MOPA and MCC, discussed on its current plastic repurposing and recycling program in the Greater Male city area and how to successfully continue the program with corporation from the MCC. It was also agreed to collaborate on a new project on collection and recycling single use plastics around Male and MOPA assured that it would provide full corporation to the MCC.
In the meeting, Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu was joined by some of the councilors and administrative staff from the MCC. The MOPA delegation included the Founder and President Thoriq Ibrahim and members of executive committee.
