Dh. Kudahuvadhoo Council unites with Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) to combat ocean plastics by waste segregation and recycling PET.

20th September 2021 (Monday) , Male, Maldives – MOPA signs an MOU with Dh. Kudahuvadhoo Council

  • MOPA and the COUNCIL have agreed to work together to facilitate Island PET collection and recycling project.
  • Both parties will be working to implement and execute the services in the Island towards the mutually respected sustainable development goal,

MOPA and Dh. Kudahuvahoo Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work towards the mutual goal to combat ocean plastics. Mr. Thoriq Ibrahim, President & Co-Founder signed the MOU followed a virtual event on Monday, 20th September 2021. On behalf of Dh. Kudahuvadhoo Council, Mr. Ibrahim Fikuree, the President of the Council signed the MOU.

The council wishes to collaborate with MOPA on its first pilot project on PET collection from Islands, where MOPA extends its resource and expertise to organize, collect and transport for recycling PET plastic waste collected in Dh. Kudahuvadhoo, facilitated by stakeholder’s support. In order to support the council, the organization will be providing bins and bags to each household and large dustbins to place at various locations on the Island for collection of PET plastic and general waste. In addition, MOPA implemented an agreement to host awareness programs within the Island about plastic segregation and management.

We understand how important it is to have awareness programs on board following a big goal as such. Therefore, we will be supporting the awareness programs hosted by MOPA in any way we can.Mr. Fikuree, President of Dh. Kudahuvadhoo Council

The Project is one of our first Island level pilot projects  towards supporting waste segregation  at source and collection  of PET bottles for recycling  and ultimately ensuring our common goal of keeping our oceans clean and free of plastic.” –Thoriq Ibrahim, President & Co-Founder.

The project is supported and funded by existing partner of MOPA, Maldives Aerated Water Company under their extended producer responsibility program, nearby resorts namely Kandima Maldives, Niyama Private Islands and Riu Atoll Resort. The collected PET bottles are handed over to Parley Maldives by MOPA for export to Recycling.
