Every year millions of tonnes of plastics enter the ocean, and continue to pose a significant threat to the environment, human health, and well-being of peoples and communities. Urgent and concerted action is needed to address this issue and implement measures to restore balance in the marine ecosystem.

Maldives has become a one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world for tourism due to its pristine environment. The industry is growing at a very fast pace especially with the introduction of guest houses in the local islands. The tourist arrival last year was more than 1.3 million and more resorts and guest house are expected to be opening this year. With this increase in tourist arrival comes the extra burden to the environment and to find solutions on how the economic activities can be managed sustainably without harming the fragile environment.
